Chris Ahern’s lab at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine studies the molecular function of ion channels and the basis for ion channel disorders. He received his BS in Chemistry and PhD in Physiology at UW-Madison where he was interested in the function of calcium ion channels in skeletal muscle. He then pursued postdoctoral training with Dr. Richard Horn at Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia in addition to Drs. Dennis Dougherty and Henry Lester at the California Institute of Technology where he applied chemical biology and suppressor tRNA to study voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels.
When not at the patch-clamp rig, Chris spends his time on the local single track and gravel roads thinking of the next experiment.
